Step into Art at Holy Family...

“We don't make mistakes, just happy little accidents.”

What does Art look like at Holy Family?

The Art and Design programme at Holy Family is dedicated to inspiring and challenging students to become the 'creatives of tomorrow.' By providing opportunities for experimentation and self-expression through art, craft, and design, we aim to foster their individual creativity. Our art curriculum equips all pupils with the essential knowledge and skills necessary to recognise the significance of artists, as well as to plan and execute their own artistic endeavours.

Our curriculum has been meticulously crafted in collaboration with an art specialist and subject leaders. Lessons are purposefully designed to contextualise learning, ensuring that students grasp the significance of the curriculum and its influence on understanding and shaping the world around them. Our Art and Design teaching comprehensively covers all requirements of the National Curriculum. Children are systematically taught the skills associated with drawing, painting, printing, sculpting, and modelling that are appropriate for their year group, while being encouraged to experiment with and subsequently review and refine their artwork.

At Holy Family, our teachers strive to provide students with opportunities to expand their knowledge of a broad spectrum of both classical and contemporary artists, selecting figures from various cultural backgrounds worldwide. It is essential for all students to see their identities reflected in the art world through a thoughtfully designed, inclusive curriculum.

In Early Years Foundation Stage children are given structured opportunities to explore and utilise a variety of materials, tools, and techniques, experimenting with colour, design, texture, form, and function. They can share their creations, articulating the processes they have employed. In Key Stage 1, pupils learn to creatively use a range of materials in the design and production of various items, including drawing, painting, and sculpting. By Key Stage 2, children will further hone their skills, broadening the scope of materials and opportunities to experiment with different mediums. Throughout their journey at Holy Family, students will cultivate the skills necessary to create their own works across a variety of styles and media.
