What does computing look like at Holy Family...

At Holy Family, we recognise the significance of technology in education and its broader implications in society. Consequently, we implement PurpleMash, an exceptional computing programme that equips children for the future. Our aim is to prepare pupils for the opportunities and careers that technology may offer—many of which may not even exist yet. The computing curriculum at Holy Family is centred on cultivating well-rounded digital citizens, adept programmers, and self-assured users of information technology. This development is crucial not only for their education but also for their contributions to society and their personal advancement. The transformative potential of computing connects individuals and communities worldwide, and we are committed to demonstrating how these connections can be fostered through technological literacy.

A key focus of our Computing curriculum at Holy Family is Digital Literacy. We aspire for our pupils to use technology safely and respectfully, recognising both the wonderful opportunities the online realm presents and the associated risks. We instruct them on maintaining a balanced approach to screen time, discerning between genuine and 'fake' news, ensuring their online safety, and understanding the repercussions of their actions in both online and offline contexts. At the outset of each unit, every class engages in a dedicated E-Safety lesson.

We promote programming skills by fostering problem-solving and computational thinking. Within a language-rich environment, we introduce the technical vocabulary linked to programming to help children articulate and rationalise their ideas. We strive to develop their analytical thinking, which can then be applied across the curriculum. Pupils are given the chance to design, create, and evaluate programmes while independently applying the skills they have acquired.

Information technology is taught through diverse experiences with a range of software and hardware. We begin with foundational skills, such as typing and computer navigation, before enabling children to produce digital imagery, games, and music, showcasing the extensive possibilities technology can offer.

Our progressive curriculum equips pupils with essential knowledge and skills as a stepping stone towards careers in media, administration, data analysis, advertising, programming, and a multitude of other fields where proficiency in information technology is an asset. When pupils depart from Holy Family after completing the Computing curriculum, they do so well-prepared for the next stage of their educational journey.
