Step into Music at Holy Family...
At Holy Family, we offer a comprehensive and inclusive music curriculum developed in collaboration with Wigan Music Service and our subject leaders, ensuring it is tailored specifically to our school’s needs. This curriculum allows students to appreciate the significance of music in today’s society. By fostering a thorough and organised understanding of various musical styles and influential figures, students can contextualise their own musical experiences and draw comparisons and insights relating to music from diverse times and cultures. In every music unit, we strive for all students to achieve meaningful progress in the core aspects of music: singing, listening, composing, and musicianship.
Our curriculum features a clear progression framework, facilitating the building of new knowledge and skills upon a solid foundation, which is continually reinforced. Weekly music assemblies for all children in Key Stages 1 and 2 provide regular opportunities for students to sing and celebrate as a collective. Additionally, children in Early Years and Key Stage 1 enjoy frequent singing activities within their classroom settings. Every child has the opportunity to perform at Holy Family during nativity plays, violin concerts, and end-of-term productions.
Holy Family embodies an inclusive philosophy towards musical cultural capital, encouraging pupils to be open-minded in their listening habits while also gaining an understanding of the vast array of musical genres present today. Pupils are invited to express their thoughts on their listening experiences and the music they encounter at school. They have the chance to learn to play a variety of instruments, including recorders, African drums, and ukuleles. Furthermore, Year 3/4 pupils partake in weekly string lessons where they can explore playing the violin, viola, or cello.
All children, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), receive support to fully engage with the music curriculum. This may include additional adult assistance and structured musical experiences specifically designed for SEND students. Moreover, some children from economically disadvantaged backgrounds benefit from free music tuition funded by the pupil premium.
