MATHS CURRICULUM

Step into mathematics at Holy Family...

“I’ve always been interested in using mathematics to make the world work better.”

-Alvin E. Roth

What does Maths look like at Holy Family?

The maths curriculum at Holy Family is designed to cultivate a passion for mathematics and nurture our pupils into life-long learners. From grasping the fundamental principles of one-to-one correspondence to mastering complex, multi-step algebraic problems, we are committed to equipping students with the requisite skills, a profound understanding, and a genuine enthusiasm for learning mathematics, both within and beyond the confines of the classroom. Building upon the foundations provided by White Rose (Whole School) and Mastering Number (EYFS and KS1), our leadership team has developed a thoughtful and inclusive curriculum aimed at supporting all learners.

Teachers implement the White Rose mixed-year curriculum to ensure that pupils establish a solid grasp of all mathematical concepts, ensuring they are proficient in their numerical knowledge and fact fluency, thereby preparing them to advance to the next year group. A clear progression of essential skills and concepts has been meticulously mapped out.

Planning for EYFS, KS1, and KS2 aligns with the National Curriculum, utilising the DfE mathematics guidance to enhance the learning experience. Furthermore, teachers incorporate an adapted version of the White Rose planning overview at our school to ensure that concepts are introduced in manageable steps. The core of White Rose Maths is the maths mastery approach, which focuses on depth rather than acceleration, ensuring that key concepts are fully grasped before moving on. This approach aligns with the Learning Objectives of a range of school years, providing a coherent and connected curriculum.

In KS1, children follow Mastering Number in addition to White Rose. Mastering Number aims to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children from Reception through to Year 1 and Year 2. The aim over time is that children will leave KS1 with fluency in calculation and a confidence and flexibility with number. Attention will be given to key knowledge and understanding needed in Reception classes, and progression through KS1 to support success in the future. From Year 2 onwards, pupils are also acquainted with Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS) to aid in developing their times tables.

Exposure to a variety of strategies, both mental and formal, encourages our learners to reflect upon which methods best meet their individual needs, fostering a sense of autonomy and independence in their mathematical thinking. Continued access to tangible resources across key stages promotes self-directed learning, resilience, and ambition while accommodating diverse learning styles. Pupils will come to recognise how mathematics interrelates with other subjects, their extracurricular lives, and the broader world.
