Step into Geography at Holy Family...
At Holy Family, the study of geography inspires children to view themselves as geographers. The curriculum is meticulously designed to foster a comprehensive understanding of the interplay between human and physical geographical processes. Students engage with a diverse array of thematic and regional studies that place their identity and locality at the core of their learning, establishing connections that span from the local to the global.
Children are encouraged to apply their knowledge and skills to comprehend the current state of the world and to envision what the future may hold. The curriculum promotes inquiry-based learning, enabling children to conduct fieldwork and cultivate proficient map-reading skills. Geography is interwoven into every subject across the curriculum, creating a rich tapestry of knowledge and skills that connect various aspects of their education.
The geography curriculum is built upon crucial geographical skills and knowledge encompassing place, location, physical, and human geography, as designed by our leaders. It aligns closely with the aims and content of the National Curriculum at every key stage. This journey begins in the Early Years with the ‘Understanding the World’ strand of the EYFS framework. Children develop essential knowledge, understanding, and skills across a variety of geographical themes and regions. They learn to recall and apply their knowledge to demonstrate geographical enquiry and critical thinking while making connections and comparisons between places, peoples, resources, and both natural and human environments, alongside key physical and human processes of the Earth.
Lessons are framed within context to ensure their relevance, allowing children to grasp the significance of the geography curriculum and its capacity to explain and influence their surroundings. As students progress through the school, they will build upon their knowledge, understanding, and skills.
Nurturing children’s geographical comprehension also enhances their personal identity and sense of belonging in the world, empowering them to engage with global issues and to challenge injustices. Geography serves as the catalyst for kindling our students’ fascination with and affection for the world, fostering a passion for lifelong learning and the capability to effect change.
Fieldwork is a pivotal component of the geography curriculum. Every year group partakes in fieldwork activities within the school grounds, the local area, as well as excursions to other towns and cities. Such experiences cultivate a sense of scale and locality, familiarising children with the world around them. Every child, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) or from disadvantaged backgrounds, is supported to fully engage with the geography curriculum through our inclusive approach, which incorporates visual aids, scaffolding for oracy, and targeted adult assistance.
