British Values at Holy Family




Holy Family Primary School recognise the importance of preparing children positively for life in modern Britain. We teach our pupils the fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. We do this through our school ethos, a broad and balanced curriculum and Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development.

Democracy

"Schools should encourage respect for democracy and support for participation in the democratic processes including respect for the basis on which the law is made."

At the start of each school year, pupils vote for their school council class representatives. The school council meet regularly to discuss issues in school. 

Children learn about democracy through mock elections and debates. Our Wigan MP, Lisa Nandy spoke to the children about her life as an MP. 

 

The Rule of Law

"An appreciation that living under the rule of law protects individual citizens and is essential for their well being and safety."

Children are taught the reason behind laws that govern us and the consequences when laws are broken. We have regular visits from our local PCSO and police officers who remind children of the rule of law and staying safe. 

Children learn about rules through The Ten Commandments and create their own school rules. 

 

Individual Liberty

"Encourage children to accept responsibility for their behaviour and understand how they can contribute positively to society."

Children are encouraged to understand and make safe choices. This is reinforced through worship delivered by the children and through class assemblies. 

The Wigan Life Education Caravan regularly visits school, teaching children about leading a healthy lifestyle, friendships and all aspects of Personal, Social and Health Education. 

 

Mutual Respect

"Encourage respect for other people."

Children learn how their behaviour can affect their own right and the rights of others. Our school community treat each other with respect and welcome others to our school. 

We operate a buddy system whereby our older children look after the younger ones, teach them how to follow our rules and help them make friends. 

As a school, we have supported MacMillan, Save the Children, CAFOD and other charities and sponsored children at an orphanage in Kenya. 

Each year, we participate in Anti-Bullying Week where all of these messages are reinforced. 

 

Tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs

"Enable children to acquire an appreciation of and respect for their own and other cultures."

Our children learn about different faiths in the curriculum. We teach our children about the beliefs and faiths people have and how we should respect each other for this.
