Mrs Summerton's Class

'To learn you must want to be taught' Proverbs 12:1

Mrs Summerton and Mrs Tickle are pleased to welcome you to Year 5/6.

Here are a few points to help you during the year:

  • Homework, usually a piece of English and a piece of Maths, is given out on a Friday and is to be handed in on Monday morning
  • Spellings are given out every Monday and are the tested the following Monday
  • Reading books are collected on Mondays and Fridays. Children are expected to read each night at home. The reading record should be signed to say that this has been done
  • P.E kits should remain in school during term time. P.E days are Monday and Friday

Autumn Term

R.E will focus on family and also on belonging. We will look at inspirational people and organisations as well as thinking carefully about marriage and commitment.

In English we will be studying a range of genres and will be using several different texts to help us. These include Skellig by David Almond and A Christmas carol by Charles Dickens

In Maths we will be working hard on the four operations addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We will also be learning about fractions, percentages and decimals.

We will be learning all about the Ancient Greeks this term. This will include writing a playscript and making a Greek tragedy/comedy mask using mod-roc.

Spring Term

R.E will focus on The Eucharist and also on Sacrifice. Children will be learning about the most important part of Holy Mass and will also be exploring the conscience of Judas as he made the decision to betray Jesus.

In English we will be using the book ‘Wonder’ by R J Palacio to think about bullying and its effects. We will be writing character descriptions and diary extracts that explore characters thoughts and feelings.

In Maths we are working on ratio and proportion and also looking at graphs and measurement.

Our Creative curriculum topic this term is The Industrial North. It will begin with a visit to The Lowry art gallery and also Media city. Here children will be able to see for themselves how the docks have changed over time. They will also have the opportunity to use techniques that L.S Lowry himself used and they will produce an industrial landscape painting.
