'To learn you must want to be taught' Proverbs 12:1

 

Mrs Summerton and Mrs Tickle are pleased to welcome you to Year 5/6.

Here are a few points to help you during the year:

  • Homework, usually a piece of English and a piece of Maths, is given out on a Friday and is to be handed in on Monday morning
  • Spellings are given out every Monday and are the tested the following Monday
  • Reading books are collected on Mondays and Fridays. Children are expected to read each night at home. The reading record should be signed to say that this has been done
  • P.E kits should remain in school during term time. P.E days are Monday and Friday

 

Autumn Term

R.E will focus on unconditional love, looking at the story of the Prodigal Son.

In English we will be studying a range of genres and will be using several different texts to help us. These include Good Night Mr Tom and The Wizard of Oz.

In Maths we will be working hard on the four operations addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We will also be learning about fractions, percentages and decimals.

We will be learning all about World War Two this half term. This will include writing letters as evacuees and looking at the impact of the holocaust. 

 

Spring Term

 

R.E will focus on Unity, Death and New Life and the season of Lent, focusing on Ash Wednesday and Holy Week. 

 

In English we will be using the book 'The Indian in the Cupboard' to link with our topic on the Amazing Americas. 

 

In Maths we will be working on ratio and proportion and also looking at graphs and measurement.

 

Our Creative curriculum topic in the spring term will be The Amazing Americas. Children will work on their map skills before focusing on the lives of native American Indians. 

 

Summer Term

In RE this term, we will be linking with CAFOD for our topic work 'The Common Good'. We will look at the work that CAFOD does all over the world. 

 

In English, we will be looking at Parliament and carrying out debates which we will use to create some formal writing. 

 

In maths, it will be all about problem solving this term. We will work as teams to solve problems which will include creating a theme park. 

 

Our topic will focus on Comparing the UK with St Lucia. This will include looking at and comparing landscapes as well as creating our own landscape painting using a variety of mediums.
